MicroBank is a member of the Deposit Guarantee Fund for Credit Institutions stipulated by Royal Decree 16 of 14 October 2011. The maximum guaranteed amount per depositor is €100,000 at each credit institution.

MicroBank provides users with basic payment accounts

Any potential customer who is a consumer and natural person, who does not have another payment account in Spain, is entitled to a basic payment account, except in certain cases regulated by law (regulated by Spanish Legislative Royal Decree 19 of 24 November 2017). You do not need to purchase other products or services from the institution in order to open a basic payment account.

*Debit card issued by the hybrid payment institution CaixaBank Payments & Consumer, E.F.C. E.P., S.A.U. ("CPC"), with registered office at Avenida de Manoteras nº 20, Edificio París (28050 Madrid). CaixaBank, S.A. acts as the agent of the card issuing entity. The system chosen by CPC to protect the funds of payment service users is to deposit them in a separate account opened with CaixaBank, S.A.

    The Basic Payment Account has no maintenance fee if you are in a vulnerable situation and meet the requirements of Royal Decree 164/2019.

Steps to open a basic payment account

  • Go to a CaixaBank branch

    You will have to provide an official ID document (See more information in FAQs).

  • Provide your socio-economic details

    To comply with the money laundering prevention act.

  • Sign the contracts

    Which include the rules for your relationship with CaixaBank, and the digital banking and debit card contracts.

FAQs about the basic payment account

  • With the Basic Payment Account, you'll be able to:

    • Deposit and withdraw cash.
      You can do so at:
      • ATMs of CaixaBank and certain other banks.
      • CaixaBank's commercial branches that have a teller service.
    • View the money you have and your banking activity.
      You can do so at:
      • ATMs of CaixaBank and certain other banks.
      • CaixaBank's commercial branches that have a teller service.
      • CaixaBankNow digital banking.
    • Schedule bill payments.
      You can set up your bill payments. For example, electricity, water or gas. At the end of the month, the bill will be charged automatically.
      This operation is free for bills in euros in the European Union.
    • Make transfers.
      You can do it at a branch or online at CaixaBankNow.
  • The Basic Payment Account includes a card issued by CaixaBank Payments & Consumer, a CaixaBank company. CaixaBank also acts as the intermediary for processing this card.

    To protect your money, CaixaBank Payments & Consumer keeps it in a special and separate account within CaixaBank, ensuring it is always available to you and not mixed with other bank funds.

  • With the Basic Payment Account, you can make up to 120 transactions a year in euros within the European Union with no fees. These transactions include payments like direct debits (such as electricity or water bills), transfers and standing orders, both at CaixaBank branches and through your online account.

    If you make over 120 transactions a year, additional fees will be applied. However, these fees will not be higher than the standard cost that CaixaBank applies to each type of transaction. You can view these costs on the Bank of Spain website.

    • Live in a European Union country.
    • Use this account only for your personal and household expenses. For example: to buy clothes, food, pay bills, buy cinema tickets, train tickets, etc.
    • If you are self-employed, you can't use the account to pay for your business expenses.
    • Not have accounts in CaixaBank or other banks.
    • Provide all the information we request from you
    • Not pose a security problem to the country.
  • Depending on your nationality, you will need to provide one of the following official documents:

    • Spanish nationality: National ID Card (DNI).
    • Foreign nationality:
      • Residence card
      • Foreigner Identity Card
      • Passport
    • Citizens of the European Union or European Economic Area: Document certifying the NIE by means of a European Union Citizen's Certificate, which must include the NIE number assigned and the address in Spain.
    • NIE or Asylum application document.

    In some cases, we will also ask you to provide additional documentation required by the Money Laundering Prevention Act.

  • If we can't open the Basic Payment Account immediately due to additional checks or documentation required by the Anti-Money Laundering Act, we will provide you with an account application form, which you must sign and keep. Within 10 days, we will let you know if you can access the account. If your application is approved, you will have to go to the branch to complete the process. If it is rejected, you can submit a claim to CaixaBank Customer Service if you wish.

  • The Basic Payment Account is intended for people in a vulnerable situation or at risk of financial exclusion. If your application for a free account is approved, you will be eligible for the free account for 2 years.

    You can request it if you meet any of the following conditions:

    • Your and your household's annual gross income does not exceed the following thresholds, based on the Public Multi-Purpose Income Indicator (IPREM):
      • 3 times the IPREM if you are not part of a household.
      • 3 and a half times if your household has fewer than 4 members.
      • 4 times if your household has 4 or more members or is officially recognised as a large family.
      • Four times if there is a person with a disability of 33% or more in your household.
    • No member of the household owns, directly or indirectly, real estate (except for the primary residence) nor holds shares in commercial companies.
    • Victims of trafficking or sexual exploitation. In this case, the above requirements will be waived.

    You must prove your situation with the following documents:

    • Number of members in the household: Family book or certificate of civil union.
    • Household income: You can provide any of these documents:
      • Income certificate or proof of submission of the Wealth Tax return.
      • Last three payslips.
      • Certificate of unemployment benefits or subsidies.
      • Certificate of welfare payments or minimum insertion income.
      • If you are self-employed, certificate of benefits for cessation of activity.
      • If you do not have these documents, a report from social services of the city or town where you are registered.
      • For victims of trafficking or sexual exploitation, a report issued by social services or specialised entities.

    Also, in an effort to streamline the process, CaixaBank also accepts reports issued by social workers from the following entities: Cruz Roja Española, Cáritas Española, ACCEM, Fundación Cruz Blanca, Fundación Secretariado Gitano, Fundación Cepaim.

    The request for a free account will be processed within 30 days after all the required documentation is delivered.

  • The Basic Payment Account does not pay interest. NIR: 0%, APR: -0.718% assuming a daily balance of €5,000 is maintained constantly for 1 year, applying an account maintenance fee of €36/year (€3/month). The account settlement is carried out monthly.

    If you are in a vulnerable situation (you meet the requirements of Royal Decree 164/2019, of 22 March), the basic payment account may be completely free. NIR: 0%, APR: 0%.
